10 ways to get out of a quarter life rut

Are you feeling unsure about what you are doing with your life? Do you feel like you’re in a funk or rut that’s killing your vibe? Have you used the term “quarter-life crisis” at least once in your life? If your answer was YES YES YES then keep reading for 10 awesome ways to kick your butt out of your rut.

1. Change it up - If you are feeling like you’re in a rut, chances are something in your life is making you feel this way. Or maybe something is missing that you need to start doing! Sit down and reflect on what it might be (for example maybe you’re not enjoying your current job) and make a positive change.

2. De-clutter your space - Nothing feels better than throwing away unwanted or unneeded things that just take up space and make you feel generally overwhelmed. This can also include your cyberspace...it is seriously therapeutic deleting old embarrassing photos of yourself from high school from your facebook account, and it’s also more professional as you are moving through your adult years. Trust me.

3. Set yourself 3 main goals you want to work towards - Setting goals makes you feel focused, helps you know what you want and makes you feel like you have a direction to work towards. Once you have set those goals you can develop smaller goals that help you work towards the ‘big 3’. Sneaky hint: Try and keep the time period under 12 weeks. Long goals can tend to be forgotten, and achieving shorter goals can act as motivation to drive you towards more long-term ones.

4. Organise a scheduled-in weekly/fortnightly/monthly meetup with your friendship group or one of your best friends. Studies in Europe found that those with stronger friendship relationships were more likely to live longer. Sounds like a pretty good reason to hang out with your besties.

5. Meditate for at least 5 minutes a day - Just sit down for 5 minutes, whether its before you get ready in the morning, on your lunch break, or before you go to bed, and close your eyes and focus on your breath. Your brain will love you for giving it a time out each day.

6. Join an exercise group - Exercise groups are fun, social and there’s so much variety. The added bonus is how great you will look and feel too. Exercise also releases endorphins which are basically happy pills for your brain (yay).

7. Learn some simple mindfulness methods to use whenever you feel yourself spiraling into overwhelm. One of my personal favorites is the 5 4 3 2 1 grounding method: ground yourself in the present moment by thinking of 5 things you can see, 4 things you can feel, 3 things you can hear, 2 things you enjoy the smell of, and 1 thing you can taste or like the taste of.

8. Work on one bad habit to eliminate from your life - bad habits make us feel icky inside usually because they’re bad for us, and the bad makes us feel guilty. One of the most effective methods I’ve found to curb a bad habit is progressive extremism. Information on this method is linked below!

9. Be a little selfish. A great quote by Mandy Hale states that self-love and self-care is necessary in order for us to be able to help others. ‘It’s not selfish to love yourself, take care of yourself, and to make your happiness a priority. It’s necessary.’

10. Express gratitude. Think of and say out-loud, or write down in a journal, 3 things that you are grateful for each day. It’s pretty damn hard to feel down when you build yourself up everyday.

11. Visualize. Create a mood board or Pinterest board about what does and would make you happy. Think about what you want to keep in your life and what you want to add to it. Is there anything in your life now that didn't make the board that you can remove?

(Okay someone clearly can’t count here)
